KORU STATEMENT
THE KORU
The scrolled-shaped Koru is linked to the fern plant. The curled-over tip unfurls and becomes a fern leaf. The Koru, representing perfection, reaches towards the light encouraging positive new beginnings and the unfolding of new life.
Historically, the Koru was used to identify new beginnings in either life or prosperity that was brought to a whanau through either good living or unification of the wider whanau unit. With this basis, the whanau becomes a prominent weave within the hapu and Iwi where each is required to unite for the safety and protection of land, possessions or lives.
Where there is mamai within the whanau, hapu or Iwi, the sacred creative power of the Koru is a constant reminder of the healing that can take place and the reaffirmation of one's personal direction within the circle of life.
THE KORU - a symbol of new beginnings and unfolding new life - The College of Future Learning NZ acknowledges the educational journey you are beginning and offers nourishment and support for your future.

TREATY OF WAITANGI
Te Tiriti o Waitangi
In 2002 workshops and other internal staff development designed to address the issues raised by the treaty, bi-culturalism, cultural safety and cultural sensitivity took place. The college staff expressed a sincere desire to have their ignorance in these matters dealt with and once they have the necessary information to hold informed opinions feel they will be able to discuss intelligently and meaningfully what it means to have a commitment to the Treaty.
We are a kura not a waananga. Our Maori steering committee has told us the college can best serve Maori by delivering high quality educational programmes and skills training using culturally safe tutors, both Pakeha and Maori, who "knows their business and leave Maori business out of the Marae with Maori people where it belongs".
The emphasis in this organization must be placed on the professional development of our staff so that we can function in a culturally safe manner and become trusted educational resources for Maori in accordance with the standards and values set forth in this document.
